THAI AND JAPANESE MINISTERS JOINTLY OPEN AIT SYMPOSIUM ON ‘NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR URBAN SAFETY OF MEGA CITIES IN ASIA’

Minister of Transport, Mr. Suriya Jungrungroengkit, and Japan Cabinet Deputy Minister, Mr. Kenzou Yoneda will jointly preside over the opening of the INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ‘NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR URBAN SAFETY OF MEGA CITIES IN ASIA’ on October 28, 2002 at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Bangkok.

Supported by the Government of Japan, the symposium will be organized by the International Center for Urban Safety (ICUS) at the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS) of the University of Tokyo in collaboration with
the School of Civil Engineering of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).

Registration is free of charge. Interested participants please register before October 24, 2002. For registration and more information, please email Dr. Pennung Warnitchai at [email protected]

The symposium’s topic is timely because with rapid economic developments, the growth of high-rise buildings and other infrastructure in Mega cities in Asia escalated. However, this growth in infrastructure is not adequately balanced with appropriate measures for their maintenance and management, leading to a deterioration of urban infrastructures and resulting in urban disasters in many cities. Advanced technologies including Remote sensing (RS), GIS, GPS and other computational tools have generated a lot of motivation to focus on devising appropriate methodologies for management and maintenance of urban buildings and infrastructures for sustainable development of Asian mega cities with adequate safety and security.

The symposium will bring together decision makers, practitioners and researchers to share their expertise, knowledge and experience in tackling critical issues in urban safety with advanced technologies. It is envisioned to set a platform for establishing a network of Asian researchers and practitioners for future collaboration in various issues of urban safety of the Asian Mega Cities.
