AIT President Said Irandoust welcomed representatives from partner
institutions, governments and alumni at the auspicious event. Prof.
Tran Dac Su, Rector of the University of Transport (UTC) and
Communications delivered a congratulatory speech on the occasion. Prof.
Su extended his best wishes to AIT and congratulated AIT for its 50
years of achievements in promoting capacity building of the region. He
stressed the importance of AIT’s role in Vietnam as a long standing and
strategic partner in the development of the country.

Dr. Amrit Bart, Director of AIT Vietnam (AITVN) mentioned the role and
initiatives of the AIT-Vietnam (AIT-VN). AIT alumnus, Dr. Nguyen Thi
Hong Minh (ISE-1998), Vice Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering
at the Hanoi University of Technology, shared her experiences about
AIT. Dr. Minh expressed her appreciation for the great time and
experience that she had when she was a student at AIT. Another alumnus
narrated how her entire family comprised of AIT alumni.

Over its half century history as a leading independent, regional
developmental postgraduate institution, the AIT has played an important
role in the development of technologies and scientific competence and
management capacity of the Asian region – and especially that of
Vietnam.

Since the 1960s, AIT has provided scholarships to Vietnamese students
to study at AIT. Starting in 1973, AIT has representatives from Vietnam
as members of its Board of Trustees. Up to now, AIT has produced 2,412
Vietnamese alumni from postgraduate programs and more than 15,000
participants from its short-term training courses provided by AIT
Vietnam (AITVN). Among AIT’s many successful alumni is Deputy Minister
for Science and Technology, Dr. Nguyen Quan. AIT was awarded the “2006
Friendship Order” by Vietnam in the area of international relations
that contributed to human resource training for the country and to the
development of friendly relations between Vietnam and other
countries.

The Asian Institute of Technology Center in Vietnam (AITCV) was
established in 1993 under an agreement between the Ministry of
Education and Training and AIT with the support from the Governments of
Belgium and Finland. In the initial stage, AITCV office was established
in Hanoi. In the same year, AIT was also involved in the
Swiss-AIT-Vietnam (SAV) Management Development Program, based in Ho Chi
Minh City. The SAV Program was supported by the Swiss Agency for
Development and Cooperation (SDC). It aimed to strengthen business
administration education at selected partner universities, and to
upgrade the knowledge and expertise of business executives in
Vietnam.

In 2009, AITCV changed its name to AITVN (AIT Vietnam). AITVN today
operates from its main offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City along with
a number of branch offices in the provinces throughout the country.
AITVN aims to provide Vietnam and countries in the region with high
quality education, training, research and consultancy in science,
engineering and management relevant for Vietnam and the region.

AITVN takes pride in being the first international tertiary education
institution instituted in Vietnam, and in being AIT’s first center
located outside of its home base in Thailand.

Vietnam is one of the fastest growing countries in the world, and the
need for capable human resources continues to grow at the same pace.
Accordingly, AIT has been running postgraduate (master’s, doctoral,
& executive master’s and doctoral) programs, and professional
training programs at AITVN and AIT Thailand for Vietnamese nationals.
Recently, AIT introduced the ‘Collaborative International Undergraduate
Program’ with a Vietnamese Partner Universit, offering undergraduate
education with international exposure to diversified expertise leading
to a new bachelor’s degree.
