AIT

The AIT graduate was presented with two certificates by Clin. Prof.
Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, M.D., President of MU, one for being the
major advisor of her student, and the another for being the program
director at the award ceremony on 21 May 2011.

Dr. Jindal, who earned her Master’s degree in Environmental
Engineering in 1982, and doctorate degrees in Water and Waste Water
Engineering in 1995 from AIT, joined MU in 2006, and is now a visiting
professor and program director, International Graduate Program in
Environmental & Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering
Department, Faculty of Engineering.

Her Master’s advisee, Ms. Ying Li, was the only student from the
Faculty of Engineering to win the “Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award”
for her work titled “The Occurence and Removal Efficiency of
Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) in the Municipal
Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs).”

According to Dr. Jindal, there is currently no routine monitoring of
pharmaceuticals and personal care products’ (PPCPs) residues, and
almost no data exists on the occurrence and fate of such emerging
micro-pollutants in municipal wastewater treatment plants and in
receiving water resources in Thailand.

She said the results of this study would help in identifying knowledge
gaps and research needs to assure the public’s health and safety and of
the environment. The findings may also contribute to the development of
a national implementation plan for the management of pharmaceuticals
and related chemical compounds that are the byproducts of the
manufacturing of such products in extensive use.

At Mahidol University, Dr. Jindal now teaches Master’s-level students
in her three courses. She said: “My learning and training at AIT during
my master’s and doctoral study periods, as well as my experiences as a
researcher and visiting faculty at AIT, have all contributed to my
capabilities in teaching and research in my field at MU.”

It was a matter of immense honor and joy for me to witness my student
receiving this award and to receive recognition myself from the MU
President as the major advisor of the 2010 Distinguished Thesis
awardee,” Dr. Jindal added.
