AIT staffer wins Marina van Damme award

A staff member of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Dang Anh Nguyet, has won the Marina van Dammeaward becoming the 13th woman to be honored by the University of Twente, The Netherlands. The award is named after Marina van Damme, who was the first female engineer to receive her doctorate from the University of Twente.
Anh Nguyet, who works at Environmental Engineering and Management
(EEM) in AIT’s School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD),
is an alumna of ITC, University of Twente, The Netherlands. After
completing her Master’s in Geo Information Science and Earth
Observation in 2012, she has been working at AIT conducting research on
interaction of land-use change, socio-economics and the ecosystem, with
Prof. Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh.The jury, while announcing her as the winner stated: “She was
excellent in her field, is ambitious, and has a social purpose.” Her
excellence is demonstrated by numerous awards she has won in her
academic career, the jury said. They also complimented her for pursuing
academics and research with a passion. “After completing her Bachelor’s
degree in Vietnam, she went to study in The Netherlands and then
proceeded to Thailand,” the jury said. Further, she wants to use her
knowledge to benefit the poorest regions of the world, including her
homeland Vietnam, the jury added in their report. The award carries an
award of 9000 Euros, and can be utilized over a period of three years
for conducting her research.Anh intends to conduct research on land-use change management
framework in Vietnam. At the handover event organized on 2 June 2015,
Anh Nguyet also had the occasion to meet Marina van Damme in person.
Describing Marina van Damme as “inspiring,” Anh stated as a young
researcher, the scholarship is “very meaningful” as she can begin her
very first project. “Someday, I can be like her,” Anh remarked.
