AIT HONORARY DEGREE TO BE CONFERRED ON MR. LEE SENG TEE

THE AIT HONORARY DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF TECHNOLOGY WILL BE CONFERRED ON MR. LEE SENG TEE, GUEST SPEAKER AT THE 83rd GRADUATION CEREMONY on Friday, 14 August, in recognition of his outstanding lifelong commitment to the support of educational and social programs in Asia, both through the Lee Foundation and his personal funds. The Lee Foundation was the first Asian Foundation to provide generous financial support to AIT, including, in 1974, US$163,000 for the construction of a dormitory block in memory of Mr Lee's father Dato Dr Lee Kong Chian; a donation of US$50,000 to the AIT Endowment Fund on the occasion of AIT's 20th Anniversary in 1979; and continuing support to the Institute's master degree program, through scholarships for deserving students. Between 1968 and 1986, the Lee Foundation supported no fewer than 77 Master's students, 53 from Malaysia, 16 from Singapore, and eight from Indonesia. Mr. Lee is recognized internationally for his philanthropic endeavors. He has made significant contributions to higher education worldwide, being the benefactor of the Lee Seng Tee Reading Rooms at Cambridge and at Oxford Universities, the S. T. Lee Lounge at the Library of the University of Pennsylvania; the Lee Seng Tee Research Library at Addenbrooke's Hospital in England, and the Reference Library at the Royal Fort House for visiting fellows at the University of Bristol's Institute for Advanced Studies. The Lee family is long-established in business, with interests, local, regional and international, in, among other areas of activity, rubber, pineapple, food, banking, hotels, publishing and the retail industry.
