Over five hundred students from 42 countries join AIT

Those accepted for admission at AIT include students from North and
South America, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Welcoming the students on the occasion of Orientation Day on 10 August
2011, Prof. Said Irandoust, President, AIT, remarked that AIT is a
perfect platform for not only learning, but also for forging lifelong
friendships, connections and networks. “AIT is not a normal university,
as it focuses on networking and learning through interaction and
observation,” Prof. Irandoust remarked. He added that AIT is an
International Intergovernmental Institute of higher learning, and
unlike traditional universities, students would be awarded a degree by
the Intergovernmental Institute.

Emphasizing the need for responsible interactions, the AIT President
said it is incumbent upon everyone in the AIT community to be open
minded, and show tolerance and respect. “This way we create a unique
learning environment, by learning from each other, while enriching
ourselves in the process,” he added.

Prof. Joydeep Dutta, Vice President for Academic Affairs stressed on
interdisciplinary nature of the Institute. “AIT focuses on learning
beyond boundaries, and students are encouraged to be a part of
interdisciplinary programs,” he added. Mr. Shane Muangkroot,
representative of the AIT Alumni Association (AITAA) asked students to
utilize the power of the alumni network.

Prof. Gabor Louis Hornyak, Director, Center for Learning Innovation
and Quality, while welcoming the students, remarked that AIT is famous
for its multicultural ethos and unique learning environment. Mr.
Avishek Kumar Karky, AIT Student Union President described life in AIT.
“AIT is a place where you will acquire priceless knowledge, wisdom and
virtues,” Mr. Karky said. He encouraged students to participate in AIT
Student Union activities. Dr. Nitin V. Afzulpurkar, Dean, School of
Engineering and Technology (SET); Dr.Weerakorn Ongsakul, Dean, School
of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD); Dr. Barbara Igel,
Dean, School of Management (SOM) introduced their respective
schools.

Later, Dr. Donyapruet Krairit, Chair, Gender Equality Committee, spoke
about AIT safeguards against any form of harassment; while Ms. Laarni
B. Roa, Coordinator, Registry, elaborated on Student Code of Conduct
and Ethical Standards. She also spoke about academic requirements and
practices, while Mr. Matthew Laszewski, Director, Language Center
introduced AIT’s Language Center Services and English language
requirements.
Mr. Stephen Andrews, Operations Director, Sodexo informed students
about student accommodation and facility management. Issues concerning
educational visa were dealt by Ms. Wannapa Pliansri, Coordinator, RTG
Relations Coordinator. Mr. Olivier Nicole informed the students about
the laptop subsidy provided by AIT, while Mr. Anthony Edwin Guirnela of
Netlink (Thailand) spoke about internet ethics and computing and
network facilities at AIT.
