Pakistan becomes fifth country to ratify new AIT Charter

Pakistan has become the fifth country to ratify the new AIT Charter and submit the Instrument of Acceptance to the Royal Thai Government. Pakistan follows Japan, Sweden, India and Sri Lanka in ratifying the Charter.

Pakistan was one of the original signatories of the new AIT Charter and the Pakistan Ambassador to Thailand H.E. Mr. Sohail Mahmood has signed the Charter on 25 August 2010. Subsequently the federal Cabinet of Pakistan ratified the Charter, and the Instrument of Acceptance has been submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of the Royal
Thai Government.The new Charter will go into effect six months after the deposit of the fifth Instrument of Acceptance. On 25 August 2010, the new Charter was signed by 12 countries and one International organization. Subsequently, Indonesia also signed the Charter on 20 January 2011. The Charter remains open for signatories for a period of one year since its
initial adoption.

So far 13 countries and one international organization have signed the new AIT Charter. These include Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Timor-Leste, Thailand and UNIFEM (now called UN Women).
