‘Competitiveness and Innovation Systems in East Asia: the Technological Aspects’. The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Sanjaya Lall, Oxford University on Monday, 9 October at 5:00 p.m., AIT Center TV Lounge

Abstract:

The importance of technological development and innovation as key foundations of competitiveness in Thailand and other ASEAN member countries is becoming increasingly evident. Professor Lall’s talk will examine the evolving patterns of competitiveness in manufactured products in developing countries, with particular reference to East Asia. It will focus on the technological aspects of competitiveness, drawing the main technology policy lessons of the leading Asian Tigers (the four mature economies), and indicating the relevance of these lessons for the policies and strategies of countries like Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines.

Speaker’s Profile:

An internationally renowned development economist, Sanjaya Lall was educated in India and at Oxford University, UK. He is Professor of Development Economics at Oxford, based at the International Development Centre of Queen Elizabeth House, and a Fellow of Green College.

He has been a staff member of the World Bank on three occasions for a total of around six years. He has acted as advisor and consultant to many organizations, including the World Bank, IFC, UNCTAD, UNIDO, FAO, ILO, UNICEF, Asian Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, African Development Bank, UN Centre on Transnational Corporations, ESCAP, OECD, CEPAL, UN University Institute of New Technologies, Ford Foundation, and the Commonwealth Secretariat. He has also advised governments in South East Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Professor Lall has published 30 books and monographs and over 200 articles and reports dealing with international investment, technology transfer and development, trade and industrial strategy. His work has focused on Asia, Africa and the Middle East but he has also worked on Latin America and the transition economies of East Europe.

‘Cost Analysis of Technology Options to Mitigate Emissions from the Transport Sector: Case of Metro Manila Area, Philippines.’ The lecture will be delivered by Ms. Fidelis Sadicon, a Research Fellow from the Society for the Advancement of Technology Management in the Philippines (SATMP) on Wednesday, 11 October at 10:30 a.m. in the Seminar Room, Energy Program. The lecture is based on her research study at AIT.

The study is under the Research Fellowship Program of the Asian Regional Research Program in Energy, Environment and Climate – Phase II, Transport Sector Project.
