A seminar, Trends in Earth Observations-Special Reference to Hyperspectral Imagery, by Dr. Sanjay Srivastava, a scientist with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), organized by the STAR Program, will be held on Thursday, 2 November, 2:15-3:30 p.m. in room ET108 (Energy Technology Building)

Background:
A look at future scenario reveals that about 70 missions carrying over 230 different instruments have been planned in the next 20 years by many space-faring nations. These instruments, with improved and diverse capabilities and with state of art technology, will facilitate many newer applications besides improving present potential. Extrapolating these developments in imaging sensors indicates the high resolution imaging of terrestrial targets. The high-resolution imaging includes spatial, spectral, radiometric and temporal resolutions of imaging capability to resolve and extract the target signatures. These trends, in conjunction with contemporary developments in algorithms and object-oriented classifiers, are leading a convergence wherein the target signatures extracted from multi-resolution data from space platforms will not be different from the true signature of the target itself. However, such convergence has to be interpreted separately in spatial and spectral domains to develop newer applications.
Hyperspectral imaging is unique in terms of characterizing the target signatures through a large number of spectral channels with narrow bandwidths. It addresses certain subtle features diagnosing target signatures, hitherto not been possible using broadband spectral characterisations of terrestrial targets.
The seminar will address these issues with case studies based on applications of the first space borne imaging spectrometer IRS P3 MOS-B (a DLR Payload on board IRS P3). The talk will also cover certain issues related to generation of syntheric data products, with higher spectral, spatial and radiometric resolutions, using multi-resolution data fusion techniques.
Third International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications (WPMC’00) to be held 12-15 November, organized by the Telecommunications Program, at the Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel, Bangkok
The above symposium, under the theme ‘Seamless Global Personal Multimedia Connectivity’, is organized by SAT’s Telecommunications Program together with the Yokosuka Research Park (YRP) R&D; Committee (Japan) and the Communications Research Laboratory (CRL) of the Japanese Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.
The sympposium highlights are six tutorial sessions, 42 technical sessions with over 200 peer-reviewed technical presentations, two Plenary sessions and a Special Session. Speakers and delegates from more than 26 countries the world over will be attending to share their expertise in wireless multimedia communications.
The cooperating partners are the IEEE, IEEE Communications Society, IEICE of Japan, NSTDA, NECTEC and Miller Freeman (Thailand) Ltd. Prof. Pairash Thajchayapong, NSTDA Director, is the General Chair, while Dr. Kazi Ahmed of AIT is the Organizing Chair.
