‘A Roadmap to ISO9000 for Training and Higher Education Institutions’

The AIT Extension will organize an ISO9000 talk on ‘A Roadmap to ISO9000 for
Training and Higher Education Institutions’ on Wednesday, 15 May,
1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the Milton Bender Auditorium, AIT Extension Building
. The
presentation will focus on:

1 What is ISO9000 and an overview on ISO9000: 2000 edition
2 Elements of ISO9000
3 Quality management principles of ISO9000
4 ISO9000 requirements

‘New Millenium Forontiers on Precision Engineeering’

The Industrial Systems Engineering Program, SAT will hold a seminar entitled ‘New Millenium Frontiers on Precision Engineering’ on Monday, 20 May, 1:30 p.m. in Room IE-106, Chalerm Prakiat Building. The seminar will be conducted by Prof. Ioan D. Marinescu, Director of Precision Micro-Machining Center, Mechanical, Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Department, University of Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A.

Abstract

The needs to establish ultraprecision mechanical fabrication processes to produce ‘microfunctional structures’, which have microstructures on their surfaces and/or inside, and capable of performing various functions, are inarguably growing stronger and stronger. In industries today, holographic
optical elements (OHE), silicon-on-insulator (DOI) substrates and semiconductor devices wafers for ultra-large scale integrated circuits(ULSI), micro-lens and microparts / components are good examples of microfunctional structures in the field of optoelectronics and mechatronics. For all these application, the definition of precision engineering was change by a few orders of magnitude. Some example of new
precision engineering processes will be presented. This will include atomistic level polishing of AlTiC magnetic heads, microspherical lens fabrication, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of the abrasive processes. Finally, some of the limitations of the precision engineering processes will be pointed out.

All ISE students are expected to attend. Interested persons are welcome.

An interview of candidates will follow after the seminar for Ph.D. Scholarship 2002-2003
at the University of Toledo, Ohio in the following fields: , Bioengineering, Manufacturing Engineering,
Biomechanics, Bioelectronics, Computation Thermal Science, Nano-machining and Design and Materials.

Candidates are requested to prepare CV, list of publication, and the statement of research interest. For more information, please contact Dr. Manukid at extension 5229.
