July 7, 2002: Professor Dayantha Wijeyesekera, Vice Chancellor of University of Moratuwa Sri Lanka visited AIT’s GIS Application Center. Discussions were held with Dr. Sohan Wijesekera, Chairman of GIS Application Center on collaborative training in Geoinformatics, Exchange of Expertise and personnel for joint activities. The University of Moratuwa located close to Colombo, Sri Lanka is a very well recognized higher education institute in Engineering, Architecture and other allied professional disciplines.

July 9-12, 2002: Prof. Jean-Marie Reynouard, Director of Research, and Associate Professor Jerome Dupuy, who are responsible for Asia Link Project, INSA, Lyon, France, visited AIT.
Prof. Reynouard and Dr. Dupuy met the President, Registrar, Provost,
and the Deans of SCE, SERD, SAT, as well as with various faculty from those schools.
The purpose of his visit was to review the current exchanges
between INSA Lyon and AIT (see Bulletin issue of March 19 at: http://www.aasu.ait.ac.th/NewsAndEvents/NewsById.cfm?NewsID=2035) and to explore ways to expand the collaboration through new programs and in other
fields in addition to energy and environment. Several possibilities have
been explored and proposals are going to be prepared for 2003. They also met
the 3 INSA Lyon students currently at AIT in the framework of our exchange program.
The delegates from International Center for Science and High Technology (ICS) and, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
July 10, 2002: Dr. Gennaro Longo, Director, Area of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences and Technologies, International Center for Science and High Technology (ICS), and Dr. Claudio Scaratti, Representative and Head, Regional Office in Bangkok, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) visited AIT. The purpose of this visit is to make the work of the ICS better known to AIT, and explore the possibility of forging closer cooperation links and conducting joint activities with AIT. In addition, AIT is interested in collaborating with ICS in joint workshop, exchange of faculty/expertise, and training programs in cleaner production, coastal zone management, and GIS.

ICS was set up at the initiative of Nobel Laureate Prof. Abdus Salam and operates as an autonomous body within UNIDO. Its mandate is to promote competitiveness and innovation in developing countries and emerging economies through the provision of state-of-the art expertise and know-how, capacity building, networking among institutions, joint R& D and technology transfer. The activities of ICS focus on four major areas, namely: Technology management and Transfer; Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences & Technologies; Pure and Applied Chemistry; and High-Tech and New Materials;
Each year ICS organizes around 50 training events (courses, workshops, expert group meetings, fellowships) involving some 1,000 managers, scientists and technologists. Most of three events are conducted around the world in partnership with national/regional centers of excellence and institutions from both developed and developing countries.
ICS has currently about 20 full-time staff, 20 consultants and 20 fellows. Its yearly core budget is approximately US$ 4 million, with additional funds being provided by donors on a project basis.
An Italian Specialist of Euro-Asian Relations
July 11, 2002: Prof. Corrado Letta, an Italian specialist of Euro-Asian relations, came to AIT to present his latest book, entitled ‘ASEM Future, Governance: A Comparative Analysis within ASEM’ to AIT. The book provides an exhaustive background of information and evaluations to the Governments and Academics involved on the ASEM process in preparation of the ASEM Summit in Copenhagen.

Academic Staff of Faculty Architecture, Planning & Surveying, University Technology MARA, Malaysia
July 15: Dr. Zakaria Bin Mat Arof, Senior Lecturer of the Faculty of Architecture, Planning & Surveying, University Technology MARA, Malaysia, led a team of academic staff to visit AIT’s Asian Center for Research on Remote Sensing (ACRoRS). He was accompanied by Mr. Mohamme Yaziz Bin Ahmad, Senior Lectuerer; Mr. Hamlussalam Bin Md. Dali, Lectuer; Mr. Ahmad Bin Abdullah, Supporting Staff; Mr. Puat Bin Sulaiman, Supporting Staff; Ms. Nor Asiah Binti Hj. Omar, Department Staff; and Mdm. Fatanah Binti Mohd. Noor.
