The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Shivaji University (SU), Kolhapur, India, have reached an agreement for a five-year unified international bachelor’s-master’s degree program which will be signed before March 2007. Prof. Said Irandoust, president of AIT, and Prof. M. M. Salunkhe, vice chancellor of SU, will be signatories for the proposed agreement. Prof. Vilas M. Salokhe will be the coordinator for this program at AIT.

The program will be implemented at the International School of Engineering and Technology (ISET) under SU and AIT. ISET is located at the 350-hectare campus of SU at Kolhapur in Maharashtra State of India. This international unified bachelor-masters degree program will be spread over five years. Out of the five years for the degree program, some of the master’s courses will be offered from the third and fourth years of bachelor’s studies, exposing students to advanced courses that lead to the master’s degree, which will be completed during the fifth year at AIT.

Initially under the first phase of offering in 2007, the areas of specializations at ISET will include Computer Science and Technology, Electronics and Communications, Environmental Technology and Food Processing Technology. Additional study programs will be launched subsequently in the second phase.

After earning their bachelor’s at ISET students will continue their master studies at AIT in Computer Science, Mechatronics, Telecommunications, Food Engineering and Bioprocess Technology, Agribusiness Management, and Environment Engineering and Management. These fields of study have been identified according to the current demand and attractiveness for Indian students. Students continuing their master’s at AIT will number 120 each year. The bachelor’s degree will be awarded by SU after four years of studies, and the master’s degree will be awarded by AIT after the fifth year.

The program will be economical compared to many other available alternatives including individual degree programs in India, Thailand, Europe, the United States or Australia.

Established in 1962, Shivaji University is named after the Great Maratha Warrior. It was founded to cater the regional needs of South Maharashtra. The jurisdiction of the university is spread over the Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts and has about 200,000 students studying in 200 affiliated colleges and recognized institutes. Shivaji University has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore.
