The prestigious Erasmus Mundus programme has kicked off at AIT with
applications being invited from interested students. The application
window opened on August 24 and will end on October 15. A total of 48
students and staff from Thailand and Indonesia will be granted Erasmus
Mundus scholarships. The scholarship covers the return ticket from the
home institution to the host institution, insurance during stay at the
host institution, tuition, living expenses and housing.
According to the EuroAsia scholarship programme, Students, researchers
and academic staff from Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Viet
Nam have the opportunity to study, conduct research or teach in Europe
for up to 20 months. Europeans have the same opportunities in
Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Viet Nam. A total 221
individuals from Europe and Asia will be provided with a chance to
broaden their perspective by studying, teaching or doing research in
another part of the world.
Eight undergraduate, 15 Masters, 15 Ph.D. and 10 postdoc students from
Thailand & Indonesia are eligible for the Eramus Mundus course.
Students at all levels with a minimum of 1 year previous university
studies and academic staff currently enrolled in or employed by one of
the 11 Partner Universities and being a national of either Laos,
Cambodia, Viet Nam, Indonesia, Thailand or an EU-27 nationas are
eligible. Also eligible are 12 nationals from Myanmar, Mongolia,
Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand or Vietnam who are in “particularly
vulnerable situations.
The participating universities from EU include University of Borås,
Sweden; Politecnico di Torino, Italy; Universidad de Alcalá, Spain;
Universidade do Minho, Portugal; Chalmers University of Technology,
Sweden; and Université de Savoie, France. The participating
universities in Asia include Gadjah Mada University,Indonesia; Asian
Institute of Technology, Thailand; National University of Laos, Laos;
Institut de Technologie du Cambodge, Cambodia; and Ho Chi Minh City
University of Technology, Viet Nam.
The project was finalized at a meeting held at the Asian Institute of
Technology in Bangkok, Thailand earlier this month. AIT is the only
institute in Thailand which is a part of the 11 member consortium for
Erasmus Mundus (EM) EuroAsia programme.
Sixteen representatives from the 11 partner universities from Europe
and Southeast Asia gathered to launch the project and discuss the
policies and mechanisms of project implementation. The Steering
Committee agreed on a Partnership Agreement, an Information Strategy
and elected Working Committee members. Dr. Hans Björk, Dean of
Engineering at the University of Borås, highlighted the partnership and
cooperation between AIT and Borås through the years that provided the
foundation of the present cooperation. Prof. Sudip Kumar Raskhit,
VP-Research, AIT added that the desire to start a mobility exchange
with Borås spurred AIT to mobilize its resources to prepare a proposal
and realize the project.
Mr. Joachim Fronia, head of the EACEA Unit responsible for the
project, and Mr. Mads Korn, Attaché (Cooperation) from the EC
Delegation, were both present for the launch. Mr. Fronia congratulated
the group for a successful proposal and emphasized that the hard work
of implementing the project will now begin.
AIT President Said Irandoust was closely connected with the Swedish
universities in the partnership–he worked with University of Boras and
with Chalmers Institute of Technology before coming to AIT. The
University of Gadjah Mada-Indonesia representative was his student in
Chalmers.
