Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) continues to support the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), and as a latest step in its ongoing partnership announced a three-year secondment of Dr. Shinichi Nakamura. A delegation of JAXA, headed by Mr. Toru Sasaki, Director, Bangkok Office visited AIT on 17 July 2013 to introduce Dr. Nakamura, who serves as a Senior Engineer and Manager in the Flight Dynamics Division, Space Tracking and Data Acquisition Department, JAXA, Japan.

Prof. Worsak Kanok Nukulchai, Interim President, AIT, while welcoming the delegation remarked that Japan has been one of the generous supporters of AIT during the past 54 years. He added that former AIT faculty from Japan constitute a very strong network, who have always helped AIT.

Dr. Nakamura, who specializes in astrodynamics, flight dynamics and satellite mission design, delivered a brief presentation on his ideas of educational and research activities during his three-year assignment at AIT. He also elaborated on the small-satellite project.

Prof. Sivanappan Kumar, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, remarked that although Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems is based in AIT’s School of Engineering and Technology (SET), it has wide ranging applications which are of interest to other schools.

Dr. Nitin Kumar Tripathi, Acting Dean, SET stated that the secondment of Dr. Nakamura opens new possibilities of partnership with Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) in Thailand and with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Dr. Nakamura’s area of specialization will complement the existing expertise in AIT, he added.

Dr. Masahiko Nagai, visiting faculty from Japan; Mr. Ahmed Amjad Ali, Head, External Relations and Communications Office (ERCO); and Ms. Sumana Shrestha, Program Officer, ERCO also attended the meeting.
