Coming from all over the world ranging from Colombia in South America
to Timor-Leste in Southeast Asia, the new batch of AIT students were
introduced to the myriad range of offerings at AIT. The largest cohort
in the January 2017 semester comes from India, with 109 out of the 197
students joining the Unified International Bachelor-Master program.
Nineteen students are on an exchange program, while nine are enrolled
in Doctoral studies. A little over quarter of the enrolled studies are
female.
In terms of numbers, India with 117 students is followed by France and
the Philippines (11 each); Thailand (10), Nepal (8), Bangladesh (6);
Myanmar and Timor-Leste (4 each); Afghanistan and Indonesia (3 each);
Bhutan, Cambodia, Finland, Germany, PR China, Sri Lanka and Vietnam (2
each); and Colombia, Lao PDR, Nigeria, Pakistan, Spain and Taiwan (1
each). South America, Europe, Asia and Africa are represented in this
batch.
AIT President Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai welcomed the new students
and introduced them to AIT’s unique character. Stating that AIT seeks
to produce “globally responsible citizens”, he enumerated the key
characteristics of AIT including international perspective, regional
orientation, multidisciplinary approach, cross-national solutions,
relevant research and political neutrality. Global citizens should take
local actions based on international perspectives, appreciate diversity
in culture and religion, act in an environmentally responsible manner,
and actively engage in issues involving entire humankind, he
added.
Vice Presidents Prof. Sivanappan Kumar and Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto; Deans
Prof. Rajendra Shrestha of School of Environment, Resources and
Development (SERD), and Prof. Lawrence S. Abeln of School of Management
(SOM); Acting Dean Dr. Matthew Dailey (on behalf of Dean Prof. Voratas
Kachitvichyanukul of School of Engineering and Technology (SET)); and
AIT Students’ Union President Ms. Piraya Lueprasitsakul addressed the
students.
Ms. Laarni Roa, Director, Office of Student Affairs was the Master of
Ceremonies during the morning session, while Dr. Tenzin Rabgyal,
Coordinator, Admissions and Scholarships Unit,was the emcee during the
afternoon session. The afternoon session introduced students to Code of
Conduct and Ethical Behavior, Anti-Harassment Policy, Student Code of
Conduct and Ethical Standards, Academic Requirements, Languages and
Student Welfare, Academic Requirements and Practices, Language Center
Services and the English Language Requirements, Student Welfare,
Placement and Counseling Services, Use of Student Information System
(SIS), Computing and Network Facilities/Services and Internet Ethics,
and Student Accommodation and Facility Management.
