The Bangabandhu Chair Professor will work on energy sector development
of Bangladesh, with a focus on “ensuring access to affordable,
reliable, sustainable and modern energy,” a key Sustainable Development
Goal (SDG).  The Bangabandhu Chair Professor will be appointed for
a fixed term of four years.

The Bangabandhu Chair Professor has been endowed by the Government of Bangladesh. The Chair is named after Bangladesh’s Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who remained deeply committed towards political, economic and social emancipation of oppressed people and led Bangladesh to its independence in 1971.

The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali
in his message notes that the Chair Professor Fellowship is aimed
towards advancement of sustainable development aspirations of the
people of Bangladesh. “It is this spirit that Bangladesh would be
fostering advanced research on applied technologies and innovation on
sustainable, affordable and clean energy under the Bangabandhu Chair at
AIT,” the Minister said. “Given our long-standing partnership with AIT,
we await recruitment of an eminent academician and expert in the field
to honour the seat of the distinguished Bangabandhu Chair at AIT,” he
added.

The creation of the endowment is a result of the initiative of H.E.
Ms. Saida Muna Tasneem, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Thailand, and
member of AIT Board of Trustees.

Thanking the Government of Bangladesh for this endowment, the AIT
President Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai remarked that “AIT is working
with many international organizations towards the achievement of
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the creation of the
Bangabandhu Chair at AIT is yet another step in this direction”.

The endowment, worth more than Baht 23.7 million shall support the
Chair Professorship for a period of four years. The endowment also has
a researcher component, who will be working on his/her doctoral studies
as the “Bangabandhu Chair Fellow” at AIT.

This is the second Chair Professorship at AIT. Earlier the Thai
Network Information Center Foundation had helped in creating a Chair
Professor position at AIT in Internet Technology.
