AIT to provide customized professional training to Power Grid Company of Bangladesh

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) will provide high-quality customized professional development courses for officers of the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited (PGCB), focusing on capacity building of professionals in areas related to the power sector.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 9 June 2017 between PGCB’s Managing Director, Mr. Masum Al-Beruni, and AIT President, Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, envisages an annual intake of 40-60 professionals from PGCB for various capacity building and training programs offered by AIT Extension.

Signing the MoU, PGCB’s Managing Director Mr. Masum Al-Beruni stated that the focus of the agreement is to prepare young professionals for leadership positions. “We wish to hand over the steering wheel of our organization to the next generation, and AIT’s training programs are a step in that direction,” he remarked. Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Worsak informed them about AIT’s close relationship with Bangladesh. “AIT’s mission is to work towards the development of this region,” Prof. Worsak said as he elaborated on AIT’s role in augmenting the human resource potential in developing countries.

The agreement envisages a focus on power transmission and covers a wide range of sectors ranging from operation and maintenance of transmission lines and grid substations to system operations and National Load Dispatch Centres (NLDCs).

Mr. Masum Al-Beruni was accompanied by Mr. Mohammed Shafiqullah, Executive Director (HRM), and Md. Zahirul Islam, Manager (Training Power and Energy). PGCB is the sole electric power transmission company in Bangladesh. As a subsidiary of the Power Development Board, it owns and operates the power grid in Bangladesh.

Executive Director of AIT Extension, Dr. Jonathan Shaw stated that AIT is ready to offer programs on Advanced Electrical Power Systems Protection, and Long Term Power System Planning. AIT Extension will offer 4-6 courses before the end of this year, Dr. Shaw added.

Attending the MoU signing ceremony were Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto, Vice President for Administration; and Mr. Fazle Karim, Head, IT and Engineering Unit, Mr. Voravate Chonlasin, Head, Public Sector Capacity Building Unit, Dr. Md. Zakir Hossain, Head, Agriculture, Resources and Environment Unit, and Ms. Narumon Wangnai, Head, Education and Training Development Unit — all from AIT Extension.
