A new book on “Climate Events and Disaster Mitigation – from Policy to Practice,” co-edited by AIT’s Prof. Jayant Kumar Routray has been released by the Centre for Science and Technology of Non-Aligned and other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre).

Edited by Prof. Alejandro Linayo Rivero of the Research Center On Disaster Risk Reduction in Venezuela, Prof. Jayant Kumar Routray of AIT, and Prof. Biswajeet Pradhan of University Putra Malaysia, the book includes 17 scientific and technical papers contributed by experts from 15 countries. The publication follows the holding of a workshop by the NAM S&T Centre in partnership with the National Science and Technology Commission (NATSEC) of Sri Lanka in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 10-13 March 2017.

“The book is expected to be useful to all people associated with mitigation of disasters arising out of severe climate events,” Prof. Routray says. He adds that the publication is targeted at a wide range of experts ranging from researchers to policy makers, and nongovernmental organizations to governmental officials.

The book is divided into five sections including Climate Change, Natural Disasters, Disaster Management Practices and Policies, Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Education and Research. In their preface, the book editors state that the objective to the publication is to present a group of selected experiences on applied science and technology efforts to address disaster risk reduction issues. While examining the existing situation in the field of climate change and disaster mitigation, the book also elaborates on future challenges that need to be addressed.

The book publisher, NAM S&T Centre is an intergovernmental organization with members from 48 countries spread across Asia, Africa,  and South America. The Centre, which was established in 1989 to promote South-South cooperation, is based in New Delhi, India.
