November 25th, 2022 — A doctoral student in Structural Engineering Ms. Srikulnath Nilnoree under the supervision of Dr. Attaphongse Taparugssanagorn from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) School of Engineering (SET), Internet of Things Systems Engineering and Telecommunications programs will be representing AIT at the Global Young Scientist Summit 2022 (GYSS2022) in Singapore. The young researcher will get to discuss ideas with the world’s renowned scientists and Nobel Prize Laureates on how to make science serve society.
The 10th Anniversary Edition of GYSS with the theme of “Excite – Engage – Enable” will be held online from January 17th to 21st, 2022 — hosted by Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF) of the Prime Minister’s Office. The event serves as a platform for young researchers from around the world to discuss trends in science and technology, and ways in which research can address major global challenges. The selected participants will be joined by the world’s leading researchers and scientists including awardees of the Nobel Prize, Fields Medal, Millennium Technology Prize, and Turing Award.
Participants are selected to join the summit on a competitive basis. Each had to go through an interview process. In Thailand, the selection process highlighted the global agenda and was supported by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn through National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA).
The Structural Engineering student from AIT School of Engineering and Technology, Ms. Nilnoree, is a recipient of His Majesty the King’s Scholarship for Doctoral Programs, with a top-up research scholarship from NSTDA, where she was invited to apply to attend the summit as a recipient of this scholarship. Explaining how applying what she’s learned to solve the real world’s problems has always been her passion, Nilnoree said receiving these scholarships to study with AIT has enabled her to follow her dreams.
“For me, my ultimate goal is to contribute something to the world – no matter how big or small the contribution will be,” the doctoral student also explained, adding that she would like to make a difference where possible.
During the GYSS2022 interview selection process, Ms. Nilnoree was asked how she would encourage the younger generation to be interested in technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) – to which she said, learning is a combination of Arts and Sciences, and the most important aspect of learning is to realize where the study will lead to. “Many students might encounter hardships in learning and studying, but the crucial part is the realization of what lies ahead.” She also added that classrooms should be transformed into playgrounds of thoughts to make studying more interesting.
Out of the 20 selected Thai researchers, AIT Structural Engineering student shared her enthusiasm in attending this event, to hear how her field of study and interest in technologies will be relevant, and how it can be applied to the world in the future from renowned speakers, as well as meeting the likeminded people to exchange ideas.
Ms. Nilnoree underscored that although she and other attendees will be joining online, it is also an opportunity to be more versatile in joining sub-sessions. She is excited to see other researchers’ works and look for opportunities for research collaborations with others.
The GYSS is a stage to showcase the thoughts of the most brilliant minds in the world. In addition, it provides a space to discuss global issues where selected participants will bear witness to propensities of the upcoming future. It gives young researchers the opportunity to assert themselves in contributing to a better world.
