ADB-JSP Scholarships August 2003 Intake
The Asian Development Bank has approved the award of 9 master’s degree scholarships
to the Asian Institute of Technology starting in August 2003 under the Asian
Development Bank – Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP). The scholarships
were awarded to the following new students:

The coverage of the ADB-JSP scholarship include tuition and registration fees,
books/instructional materials allowance, subsistence allowance, travel expenses
(one-way economy airfare from country of origin and back upon completion of study),
and other miscellaneous expenses such as visa fees and expenses related to approved
research of field studies.
The ADB-JSP was initiated in 1988 to encourage and strengthen human resource
development in less-developed countries. The main objective of the ADB-JSP is
to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB’s developing member
countries (DMCs) to undertake postgraduate studies in economics, business and
management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at
selected educational institutions in the Asia and Pacific region. Upon completion
of their studies the scholars are expected to return to their home countries
to apply and to disseminate their newly acquired knowledge and skills to enhance
socioeconomic development.
The Government of Japan is the main contributor with about US$ 53.5 million
granted from 1998-2002. According to the Annual Report on the ADB-JSP 2003,
over 1,479 scholarships have been awarded from 1988-2002 to 18 designated institutions
in the Asia and Pacific region. Among the designated institutions, the Asian
Institute of Technology (AIT) is second in terms of percentage of scholars with
the total of 205 scholarships granted or about 14 per cent. The Asian Institute
of Management (AIM) is first with 20% or 291 scholarships, while the International
University of Japan (IUJ), the University of Tokyo (UOT) and East-West Center
(EWC) are 3rd, 4th and 5th with 9% (139 scholarships) , 8% (119 scholarships)
and 6% (90 scholarships), respectively.
